Section 01
Renewable energy beyond solar, wind and hydropower
BARREL's Other Renewable Energy family covers biomass, biogas, biomethane, biofuels, waste-to-energy, geothermal, ocean energy, renewable heat and cooling, renewable fuels and emerging technologies. Solar, wind and all hydropower — large, small, mini, micro and pumped storage — are separate sector families.
The aim is an integrated ecosystem that turns agricultural resources, organic waste, biological materials, underground heat, ocean resources and industrial residual energy into electricity, fuels, heat and other energy products — covering not just generation but the complete business value chain. Rooted in Bharat. Global by vision.
1.0Four renewable sector families
Shared engineering, procurement, finance, trading, manufacturing, supplier networks and BARREL OS workflows run across all four.

Biogas, Biomethane & Bio-CNGCommercial
Biogas is produced by the biological decomposition of organic material without oxygen. It is used for electricity, industrial heating, cooling, cooking and transport fuel, or upgraded into biomethane and Bio-CNG. BARREL covers the whole chain — feedstock collection, gas production, purification, compression, distribution and by-product use.

Biogas = feed × yield. CH₄ energy at 9.97 kWh/Nm³ (LHV). Bio-CNG = CH₄ × recovery × 0.717 kg/Nm³ ÷ 0.96. The two routes are alternatives for the same gas. Presets are indicative fresh-weight values; real yields come from laboratory BMP tests of the actual feedstock. No parasitic load, flare losses or digester heating is deducted. A screening estimate — not a process design.
3.2Gas upgrading technologies
| Upgrading technology | Principle | Typical CH₄ purity | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Water scrubbing | CO₂ dissolves in pressurised water | 96–98 % | Simple, robust; needs water and H₂S pre-treatment |
| Pressure swing adsorption (PSA) | CO₂ adsorbed on carbon molecular sieve | 96–98 % | Compact, dry process; common for Bio-CNG |
| Membrane separation | CO₂ permeates faster than CH₄ | 95–99 % | Modular, staged; low maintenance |
| Chemical absorption (amine) | CO₂ reacts with amine solvent | ≥ 99 % | Very low methane slip; needs heat for regeneration |
| Physical absorption (organic solvent) | CO₂ dissolves in a solvent such as glycol ether | 96–98 % | Higher CO₂ capacity than water |
| Advanced / cryogenic purification | Low-temperature separation | ≥ 99 % | Enables liquefied biomethane (bio-LNG) |
