About our EPC services

Developing a power project requires more than procuring equipment and appointing contractors. Engineering decisions, technology selection, procurement schedules, site readiness, regulatory requirements, grid connectivity, construction quality, safety and commissioning must work together.

A delay or design change in one area can affect the entire project. Poor coordination between engineering, suppliers and site contractors can result in cost overruns, equipment incompatibility, rework and delayed commercial operations.

BARREL approaches EPC delivery as an integrated project-management and technical-execution process. We coordinate the technical, commercial and construction activities necessary to translate an approved project concept into an operational asset. Depending on the contract, our scope can include feasibility inputs, engineering, procurement, civil and electrical works, equipment installation, grid interconnection, testing, commissioning and handover.

Our objective is to deliver infrastructure that is technically compliant, commercially disciplined, safe to construct, maintainable throughout its operating life and ready for its intended application.

A. Project definition and engineering

Every successful EPC project begins with a clear understanding of what must be built, where it will be built, how it will operate and what it must achieve. Our engineering coordination can include:

  • Review of the project brief and technical requirements
  • Assessment of site information and available technical studies
  • Definition of design criteria and project boundaries
  • Technology and equipment selection support
  • Preparation or coordination of preliminary engineering
  • Basic and detailed engineering
  • Design calculations and technical specifications
  • Layouts, single-line diagrams and equipment schedules
  • Bills of Quantities (BOQ) and Bills of Materials (BOM)
  • Interfaces between civil, mechanical, electrical and control systems
  • Technical review of constructability and maintainability
  • Engineering document control and revision management

Where specialist engineering, independent design verification or statutory approval is required, the relevant scope is assigned to appropriately qualified and authorised professionals.

B. Procurement and supply-chain coordination

Equipment procurement can determine a project's schedule, cost, reliability and long-term maintenance requirements. BARREL can coordinate procurement in accordance with the approved technical specifications and procurement strategy:

  • Development of procurement packages
  • Request for Quotation (RFQ) documents
  • Vendor identification and prequalification
  • Technical and commercial bid evaluation
  • Comparison of equipment specifications and warranties
  • Purchase recommendations
  • Purchase-order and delivery-schedule coordination
  • Manufacturing progress monitoring
  • Inspection and testing coordination
  • Logistics and transportation planning
  • Site delivery scheduling
  • Receipt inspection and material reconciliation
  • Equipment documentation and warranty records

Procurement may be undertaken directly by BARREL, through approved subcontractors, or by the client under a coordinated EPC arrangement, depending on the agreed contract.

C. Civil and site development works

Civil infrastructure provides the foundation for safe construction and dependable plant operation. Subject to the contracted scope, civil works may include:

  • Site surveys and setting-out coordination
  • Earthwork and grading
  • Site levelling and development
  • Internal roads and access infrastructure
  • Drainage and stormwater management
  • Foundations for equipment and structures
  • Equipment plinths and transformer foundations
  • Control-room and utility-building construction
  • Cable trenches and underground duct systems
  • Equipment-yard development
  • Fencing and access-control infrastructure
  • Water, sanitation and site-service facilities

Geotechnical investigations, environmental studies and other specialist assessments are coordinated where required.

D. Electrical and mechanical installation

BARREL coordinates the installation of project equipment and interconnected systems within the approved scope:

  • Mounting structures and equipment installation
  • Solar module and inverter installation
  • Wind-farm balance-of-plant works
  • Battery containers and power-conversion equipment
  • Transformer installation and connections
  • Switchgear, circuit breakers and isolators
  • Busbars, conductors and electrical connections
  • Cable laying, termination and identification
  • Earthing and lightning-protection systems
  • Protection relays and control panels
  • Metering and instrumentation
  • SCADA and communication interfaces
  • Auxiliary electrical systems
  • Mechanical and electrical interface checks

All installation work follows approved drawings, equipment instructions, applicable standards and the project's quality and safety requirements.

E. Grid connectivity and evacuation infrastructure

A power plant's commercial usefulness depends on its ability to connect to the grid or the intended network. BARREL can coordinate the engineering and execution of grid-connection packages, subject to the applicable utility and regulatory framework:

  • Grid-connectivity requirement assessment
  • Coordination of evacuation-system design
  • Substation and switchyard packages
  • Transmission-line and associated infrastructure
  • Protection and control integration
  • Metering and communication arrangements
  • Interface coordination with the transmission or distribution utility
  • Inspection and testing coordination
  • Shutdown and outage planning
  • Synchronisation and grid-interconnection readiness

Connectivity approvals, transmission access, open-access permissions and grid-connection permissions remain subject to the decisions of the competent authorities and utilities.

F. Testing, commissioning and handover

Construction completion is not the same as operational readiness. BARREL coordinates the systematic verification of the installed infrastructure before handover:

  • Mechanical completion checks
  • Electrical inspection and testing
  • Cable and insulation testing
  • Earthing-system verification
  • Protection-relay testing
  • Transformer and switchgear testing
  • Functional testing of control systems
  • SCADA and communication checks
  • Interlock and safety-system verification
  • Pre-commissioning checklists
  • Punch-list preparation and closure
  • Trial operation and performance testing
  • Commissioning documentation
  • Operator training and handover coordination

Acceptance criteria, performance tests, guarantees and commissioning responsibilities are defined in the applicable contract.

Our EPC delivery methodology

  1. Stage 1

    Project assessment

We understand the client's objectives, project capacity, site conditions, technical requirements, budget, delivery timeline and proposed commercial structure.
